The daylit environment in atrium buildings is closely linked to the overall daylight transmittance of the canopy roof over the atrium well. The transmittance of the roof, and its variation with roof structure, orientation and glazing type, has received very little systematic study. As a result there is little in the way of design advice to ensure that a roof form is chosen correctly to ensure good levels and distribution of daylight whilst not incurring excessive solar gain, glare and heat loss. This research would study how roof transmittances vary under real sky conditions for a range of model roof types and building geometries, and investigate how daylight levels in spaces adjacent to the well are affected by these transmittance variations.
