Summary on Grant Application Form |
A feasibility study of the application of platewise heat-integrated distillation (PHID) to azeotropic separations as a means of replacing the use of entrainers (solvents) commonly used for this purpose. Benefits to Cleaner Technology are reduced energy and solvent use in these energy-intensive separations. The study will be based on simulations of PHID and on experiments to develop designs for plate-to-plate heat transfer. Experiments will determine heat-transfer rates in alternative geometries, eg coil-on-plate, or integrated heat exchanger plate designs. Modelling will permit the capital and operating costs of PHID to be compared with those for conventional azeotropic separation using entrainers.
