This is a multi-disciplinary cross-sectoral proposal to computer model, design and process novel materials for a new generation of aeroengines and power plant. There are three linking themes: a revolutionary computer modelling approach to the design of new and improved materials: the development of special coatings; the transfer of aerospace science and technology to power plant. We propose to develop and use metallurgical theory to optimise existing turbine blade materials and to design completely new materials, operating at ultra-high temperatures, to produce dramatic improvements in the thrust and efficiency of aeroengines. We propose to transfer aerospace technology to power plant and replace many of the iron components with nickel-base alloys which should be capable of operating at 750 C. This will lead to a huge increase in thermodynamic efficiency, enormous fuel savings and a large reduction in pollution.
