Currently, coal-fired power generation systems in the UK are based on the combustion of pulverised fuel (pf) but the preferred clean technology approach to future power generation from coal is the Air Blown Gasification Cycle (ABGC). In this, coal particles, sized to 3mm, are gasified in air / stream in a spouted-bed reactor. The differential distribution of coalmacerals in different particle sizes following comminution will result, for both systems, in a variation of coal reactivity with particle size. Using well-characterised samples of both UK and internationally-traded coals, the proposed project aims to investigate the relationship between coal properties and the particle-size distributions produced during comminution and to investigate the reactivity of particles difering in size under conditions pertinent to pf combustion and gasification in the ABGC.
