Summary on Grant Application Form
Current methods for predicting electromagnetically generated noise levels from large induction machines are inadqeuate and machines are being designed overconservatively . Methods developed and proven for small machines are simply not applicable to their large counter-parts. This research will provide an electromagnetic model which takes into account saturation, harmonically impure supply and geometric errors in the machine. It will also produce a compatible mechanical model with the capability for accuracy upto frequencies well above tooth-rocking frequency. The combination of the two models will enable the significant noise-generation effects to be identified and addressed.
