Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this proposal is to obtain a complete theoretical understanding of the optical properties of a wide class of organic semiconductors, with a particular emphasis on the phenyl based systems. We will obtain the optical absorption and non-linear coefficients, and study the interplay of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions. We will pay particular attention to understanding the physics of the low lying excitations and their relevance to the non-linear properties. This will be done by developing model Hamiltonians based on the Pariser-Parr-Pople model, whose parameters will be obtained from both semi-empirical considerations and ab initio calculations. The Hamiltonians will be solved by state-of-the-art numerical techniques. By introducing disorder and inter-chain coupling, we will distinguish between the intrinsic and extrinsic behaviour. This programme underpins, and is supported by, the experimental effort in Sheffield and elsewhere, and has important technological consequences in the display and photonics industries.
