Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed programme has three main interdependent components and seeks to build on the conspicuous success of recent research carried out at Oxford and involving hydrides of the metals of groups 12 and 13.I. Synthetic studies are the primary focus. These will be directed towards the goals of new tractable, molecular derivatives of the elements of Groups 12-16 bonded to substituents like H, BH4 and C2H5 likely to function as good leaving groups. These will typically entail the use of rigorously clean high vacuum conditions and the exploration of metathesis, displacement or insertion reactions starting from halide, organo or alkali-metal derivatives of the Main Group element, or from the element itself.II. The chemistry of the compounds will be explored, with particular reference to their decomposition, aggregation and complexation, and hence their potential as sources of the parent elements or of useful compounds of these elements.III. Detailed physical characterisation of selected derivatives will embrace a wide range of appropriate techniques, viz. matrix isolation, vibrational, mass and NMR spectroscopies, and diffraction methods, mainly to resolve problems of structure and bonding.
