Summary on Grant Application Form |
A major problem of predicting features of nonlinear convection and other transitional flows in large planform containers is the large computing power needed to accurately represent even a few convection rolls in three dimensions. The present proposal seeks to combine asymptotic and computational methods to allow such predictions to be made in the fully nonlinear regime, with important consequences for industrial applications in crystal growth and phase change processes and all areas of heat transfer technology. The main aim of the present proposal is to develop the method through the study of model problems to the point at which it will become possible to compare predictions of pattern formation and wavelength selection with experimental results for large planform systems.
