Summary on Grant Application Form |
The gulf in properties between organic paint and vitreous enamel is limiting the penetration of coated sheet steel into new markets such as: construction panels, cooker parts and chemical storage containers. Hybrid organic/inorganic polymers, which have properties intermediate between organic polymers and glass, offer a solution to these problems and the aim of the proposed collaborative project is to develop such coatings for steel. Hybrid coatings, some containing pigments, will be formulated for use at both low and high temperatures and cured by thermal UV or e-beam radiation. The relationship between their measured mechanical properties and their structures (characterised by microscopy and spectroscopic techniques) will be modelled. Two of the coatings will be applied on a pilot scale and their performance evaluated. The benefits will be better abrasion, thermal and corrosion resistance than organic coated steel and better processability than enamelled steel.
