Summary on Grant Application Form |
For future wing design based on concurrent techniques, aeroplastic behaviour should be considered at the conceptual design stage. This is currently not the case. The proposed project will enhance an existing program so that the aeroplastic behaviour of the whole aircraft configuration is modelled using a simple approach which is suitable for conceptual design. the program will also include the effects of gust loads, turbulence and control surface flutter whilst considering the additional design features which arise when using composite materials. The existing design optimisation capability, which minimises mass making design variable changes whilst satisfying various design constraints, will be extended to improve the structural model and permit design subject to buckling and material strength constraints as well as practical manufacturing constraints. In short, a practical design tool, for use in the early stages of the design cycle, will be developed to indicate the optimum size and location of structural members and the optimum location of non-structural components.
