Summary on Grant Application Form
In the call for proposals in the areas of solid polymer and direct methanol cells (SPFCs and DMFCs) a number of targets were outlined: 1) Electrolytes applicable to higher operating temperature, 2) Electrolytes and /or membrane-electrode assemblies (MEAs) with lower methanol perambulates, 3) In situ polymerisation possibly leading to an integrated MEA structure, 4) Reduced sensitivity to relative humidity/hydration level. The programme seeks to investigate approaches to all 4 targets. In seeking to overcome the known deficiencies of the currently used acidic organic ionomers, the chemical adaptability of hybrid inorganic-organic systems (organically modified ceramics, ORMOCERs) will be exploited. The chemical route of such materials is the sol-gel process, well-known for its potential for improving materials and processing. Pre-ormocers, with adjustable viscosities, for casting/coating can also be made.Materials characterisation will employ thermal, spectroscopic and electrochemical methods. Each material will be evaluated as an electrolyte per se. In subsequent fuel cell mode studies a small number of materials will be selected on the basis of their properties potential. The programme involves collaboration with Raychem Ltd (membrane technology), Johnson Matthey (MEA and fuel cell programmes) and CJB Developments (systems and user perspectives).
