Summary on Grant Application Form
Complicated dynamics of a simple forced (linear of nonlinear) oscillator rebounding from a fixed obstacle can be modelled by a discontinuous discrete dynamical system. The important discontinuity locus can be viewed as the apparent outline of a certain hypersurface in phase space. Using methods of singularity theory and bifurcation theory we shall study this outline as obstacle position and forcing frequency are varied, and investigate resulting influences on the dynamics of the system. At the same time we shall aim to reconcile the mathematical predictions with simulations and experimental results for a range of dynamical systems, with the purpose of offering practical design guides for reducing impacting (wear) by passive or active means for beam-like structures.
