Summary on Grant Application Form
New organic photopatternable polymers as non-contact alignment and passivation layers for AA-LCDs, such as TFT-LCDs, will be synthesised. A co-polymer with a photopolymerisable side-chain and a small fraction of a group capable of absorbing and retaining ions, such as a crown ether, will be macroscopically aligned by irradiation with linearly polarised ultra violet light. The resultant polymer network will be stabilised by simultaneous cross linking and will serve as a non-contact alignment layer capable of preventing ions, dissolved from the glass substrate or indium oxide electrode, permeating into the liquid crystal layer. The physical properties will be evaluated and feedback from these measurements will be used to optimise the chemical structure of the novel entities synthesised. The networks prepared can also be photopatterned using standard lithographic techniques. This multidisciplinary research programme, involving organic and polymer chemistry, physics, display device processing techniques and electronics, has a high training content in a area of UK manufacturing industry.
