This proposal will use our accumulated expertise and capital resources to fabricate and apply various HTS thin-film devices. We will advance the quality and reproducibility of films we make by Pulsed Laser Deposition, consolidate our use of bicrystal MgO substrates for Josephson junctions, and use our well-established noise measurement facilities to characterise junctions and new types of devices which feature in this programme. We will build on our practical experience in using HTS SQUIDs for biomagnetic and NDE measurements to understand better mechanisms that greatly increase noise levels when operated in the Earth's field; our aim is to make and apply SQUID magnetometers and gradiometers in real unshielded applications, with better performance than present commercial devices. A range of flux-flow amplifiers (FFAs) will be modelled and made, for use mainly as low-frequency amplifiers. We will make and test fast kinetic inductance bolometers for femtosecond laser diagnostics, in conjunction with Strathclyde University's Femtosecond Facility; the aim will be to make novel ultra-short laser pulse detectors. We will assess an FFA as a low-impedance amplifier to match a bolometer to room-temperature electronics. We will also collaborate with Glasgow University (Prof. C.D.W. Wilkinson) to develop new HTS patterning, etching and passivation techniques.
