The first aim of the proposal is to develop superabrasive grinding wheels using novel CVD diamond fibres as the abrasive material. These wheels will have the applications on nanoscale precision ceramic and optical components, where the high cutting edge density on the fibres are expected to give improved removal rates combined with high surface integrity. The wheels will be tested on a range of brittle materials (ceramics, glass etc.). The ground surfaces will be analysed for the evidence of ductile machining mechanisms and the absence of micro-cracks. The second aim is to develop a smart grinding wheel by embedding sensors within hollow diamond fibres. These sensors will provide feed-back to improve process consistency when machining surfaces to nanoscale grit depths of cut. It is proposed to measure temperatures, stresses and displacements using these embedded sensors. Hollow diamond fibres will also be used to supply coolant directly to the cutting zone.
