We aim to use the facile formation of catalytic amounts of MBHR3 from BR3 in the presence of insoluble saline hydrides MH(M = mostly prochiral carbonyl functions). Thus, the BR3 species will act as phase-transfer catalysts. Appropriate modification of the catalyst and reaction conditions will allow catalytic stereoselective reduction chemistry rather than simple MH Brfnsted base behaviour.
