Summary on Grant Application Form |
A large number of mechanical, micromechanical and environmental parameters of masonry constituents and parameters related to workmanship and material quality influence mechanical response of masonry and ultimately its strength. These parameters have been recognised and an attempt to provide partial factors of safety to consider the effect of these parameters is given in various codes (BS, EC etc.) However the exact mechanism and the extent of the reduction in the masonry strength due to these factors have not been scientifically investigated, with the present guidance based mainly on the past experience. The main objective of this programme is to examine and quantify the effects of the various causes of the reduction in strength through the introduction of combined statistical and computational models. Analyses of a series of 3D and FE stochastic models will be performed in order to identify to each of the parameters of constituents and workmanship. As a result, a more fundamental understanding of the mechanism of the masonry strength will be obtained. Also, a more precise quantification of the partial safety factor will possibly lead to more economical and safer designs.
