Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project will use the mathematical theory of nonlinear elasticity to improve understanding of the load-deflection characteristics and stability of engineering components used for vibration isolation, with special emphasis on the response is markedly different from that of unfilled rubber, will be developed to supplement those available for unfilled rubber. The theory will make use of these constitutive laws to elucidate the macroscopic response of individual layers of laminated vibration isolators under a variety of loading conditions. The basic components will then be used in combination in order to extend the analysis to multi-layer structures. An important aspect of the work will be to determine the stability characteristics of such structures under combined loading, the role of large shear deflections being emphasised. Further developments will incorporate surface elasticity theory into the analysis to facilitate the discussion of de-bonding effects which arise in practice at rubber-metal interfaces. Benefits will include the development of new analytical and numerical methods which will be applicable to a wide range of problems of theoretical and practical interest involving large deformations. The results will provide design tools for vibration isolator construction.
