Summary on Grant Application Form |
A geometric model represents a solid in three-dimensional (x,y,z) space. If that solid moves (say along the x axis) then its position at any instant can be represented by another variable (t, say). The moving object is thus an unchanging four-dimensional solid in (x,y,z,t) space. If it is free to move in y this adds another dimension (u, say), and the moving object becomes an unchanging solid in (x,y,z,t,u) space. This idea can be extended indefinitely. If any moving, changing object can be represented as an immutable solid if enough dimensions are employed. This project will be developing efficient methods of search and interrogate such multidimensional solids to generate the answers promised in Question 6 above. The central research issues (given that all that is proposed is new, and has never been done before) are ones of representation and computational efficiency. The use of set-theoretic models gives an advantage here, as the set-theory that they employ does not get more complicated as the number of dimensions used increases. But multidimensional models are still prodigious consumers of computer memory and time. We shall be using the recursive divide-and-conquer techniques pioneered at Bath to overcome these problems.
