Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose to study a range of perovskite Mn oxides (R1-xAx)Mn03 where R is a rare earth such as La, Nd, or Pr and A is a divalent cation such as Sr, Ba, Ca or Pb. Materials will be prepared in single crystal and ceramic form. Initially we will focus on the (Pr1-xCax)MnO3 (Pr1-xSrx)MnO3 and (La1-xSrx)MnO3 systems. However we will not limit ourselves to these materials. Pilot studies will explore the properties of a range of Mn systems and we will follow up on the most interesting results. These materials are currently the subject of intense interest, not only because they exhibit a number of interesting and as yet unexplained properties such as giant negative magnetoresistance and magnetic field driven structural, insulator-metal and charge ordering/melting transitions, but also because by changing doping levels, the temperature at which these effects are most pronounced can be controlled. As a result these materials have the potential to be useful in a wide range of applications.A range of measurements including resistivity, susceptibility, magnetisation, Hall effect, thermopower and specific heat at temperatures between 1.5 and 350K and in magnetic fields of up to 9T will be performed to investigate the physics of these materials. Neutron scattering studies of the most interesting materials will be carried out at centres around the world. These studies will contribute to building a clear picture of the physics of this class of materials. Keywords: Physics, Neutrons, Materials, Single Crystals, Magnetism, Magnetoresistance, Phase Transitions.
