Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project will investigate the provision of computer aids for the synthesis of plant operating procedures in process plant. The current manual generation of such procedures is time-consuming and tedious. Operability is a major design constraint, yet, in the absence of supporting tools it is very difficult to deal with it in any depth until design is complete. The project addresses these requirements for computer tools, focusing on start-up procedures. It will apply KBS techniques of qualitative modelling and hierarchical non-linear planning to operating procedure synthesis using at least one detailed case study of an actual plant from the industrial collaborators. Advanced HCI and multi-media techniques will be used to produce a user-friendly interface. The project will also produce a model of the business environment in which a computer-based tool would be used.
