Summary on Grant Application Form |
The importance of Chloride ions in reinforcement corrosion has lead to the concept of a chloride threshold level, namely the minimum chloride content at the depth of the steel representing a significant corrosion risk. A review of the literature has revealed that threshold levels range form less than 0.2 to more than 2% by weight of cement and no model exists which allows a more precise definition of threshold level for a particular set of circumstances. The physical condition of the steel-concrete interface was identified as the most important factor affecting the threshold level. Characterisation of the interfacial condition and quantification of its effect are therefore essential prerequisites to refining the threshold level for known conditions. Such refinements will permit improved life prediction in existing structures and aid the identification of the cause of deterioration during condition surveys. The identification of factors which may increase the threshold level will enable the design and construction of more durable concrete structures.
