The overall objective is to develop new fundamental knowledge of the kinetics of coal and char combustion for use in combustion models for predicting partition of fuel nitrogen into NO, N2O and N2. The relationship between Nx formation and coal structure is complex and depends on factors such as devolatilization and combustion, soot and tar formation and combustion, char burn out, the interaction of NO and N2O with char soot and volatiles, as well as burner design and reaction conditions. The experimental programme is designed to measure the kinetics of the fundamental reaction processes occurring during coal combustion for the coals used in the DTI study. In addition, detailed physical characterisation of the coals and chars as a function of the extent of devolatislization the development and valuation of a predictive computer model for NO, N2O and N2 partition during coal combustion.
