Summary on Grant Application Form |
Two University research groups, backed by firms in the combustion field, will conduct experimental and modelling research on the break-up into droplets of the liquid sheets and columns produced by atomizers. The effects of break-up on spray flame structure will be investigated, with particular interest in time-dependencies due to droplet clusters. The research is relevant to devices such as diesel and petrol injectors, gas turbine atomizers and burners for boilers, kilns or furnaces. The understanding of the physical processes together with the systematic data, will lead to a better predictive technique for droplet size distribution and patternation produced by a given atomizer design, and of the time dependent features of spray flames resulting from atomization.Key Words: Combustion, Atomization, Modelling, Fuels, Aeronautics, Chemical Engineering, Processing, Energy, Transport
