Summary on Grant Application Form
The main objective of this work is to develop a chemically-graded smart coating resistant to high- and low-temperature corrosion processes, and having mechanical properties at least as good as current overlay coatings. The project is structured as part of the LINK scheme and, accordingly, has a mix of university (ie Birmingham and Cranfield) and industrial (end-users and SMEs) partners. The coatings will be produced by a combination of plasma spraying (initially at Birmingham) followed by CVD enrichment in Cr and A1. Corrosion evaluation of early variants will be undertaken at Cranfield and mechanical property evaluation at Birmingham. Optimised coatings will be applied to turbine blades and corrosion tested by industrial partners under simulated service conditions. The final stage of industrial usage will proceed if these preliminary evaluation and characterisation tests produce promising results.
