|
As the complexity of advanced machine systems increases it is more and more difficult to find all the necessary skills in one location, especially because the most important design problems are interdisciplinary, involving contributions from mechanical, electronic and software engineers and many other specialists. The trend is towards partnerships of geographically distributed design teams. This project investigates how such new arrangements change the effectiveness of the design process and suggests new design rules and methods appropriate for distributed design teams. The collaborating organisations (The Open University, University of Bath, University of Wales at Cardiff and the Royal Mail Advanced Technology Centre, Swindon) already have comprehensive digital technology. The effectiveness of this technology in supporting distributed design is being evaluated.Key Words: multidisciplinary design, virtual design teams, mechatronics/intelligent machines, concurrent engineering, artificial intelligence, distributed systems, communications.
