Summary on Grant Application Form |
It is proposed to develop a novel ultra-high sensitivity torque magnetometer based on the microcantilever technology used in AFM sensors. This will allow the measurement of the magnetic moments of tiny samples. In addition to its sensitivity, which will easily exceed that of a commercial SQUID magnetometer by a factor of at least 1000, this magnetometer will have many additional advantages such as very fast response time, sensitivity to transverse components of the magnetisation and the ability to acquire data rapidly as a function of orientation and magnitude of the applied field. Many wide-ranging applications of such a device can be envisaged. The scientific programme will concentrate on anisotropy and relaxation studies in the timely and expanding field of the micromagnetics of clusters and multilayers. Such measurements are of both fundamental interest and technical importance.Key Words: Sensors, Devices, Nanotechnology, Design Magnetometry, Magnetic, Clusters, Magnetic Multilayers, Condensed Matter
