Summary on Grant Application Form |
This application is for the funding to maintain and manage the computer network of the condensed Matter Theory group at the Blackett Laboratory. Our current grant expires in January 1996 and to exploit and protect this major EPSRC investment demands continuing maintenance without which the viability of the system will rapidly degrade. The work we do is highly computational and maintenance of our computer system is essential to our productivity. Our research covers a wide range of topics in condensed matter and materials physics, but our common aim to bring theory and experiment closer together by applying computational techniques in an original and imaginative way. Current interests include: computer design of new materials for optoelectronic and microwave applications; simulation of fundamental structural and electronic properties of materials; simulation of the growth of materials by molecular beam epitaxy; computation of transport properties of novel electronic systems; and computer design of microstructured materials with novel electromagnetic properties. The codes and techniques were use were almost all developed within the group, but many are now being used all over the world in industry and in universities.
