Summary on Grant Application Form |
In predictions of flow transients in pipeline systems, relationships (closure laws) are required to describe the interactions between the phases and the channel walls and between the phases themselves. The common practice is to use steady state values and the validity of this is uncertain. In this investigation, the interaction terms will be specifically investigated by making simultaneous measurements of wall shear stress, local pressure gradient, interfacial structure and holdup and phase velocities during transient stratified flows. Both steady state and transient tests will be carried out since even in the steady state considerable uncertainty still remains. Comparisons will be made between the values of the interactions terms measured during transients, with both the experimental steady state values and with values predicted from commonly used literature relationships. If, as is expected, there are large discrepancies, then an attempt will be made to derive new relationships which take account of the transient nature of the flow.
