Summary on Grant Application Form |
The newly formed Thermofluids research group at Leicester University is focused on unsteady flow effects of interest to industry with especial reference to the turbo-machinery industry. The problems under investigaiton include steam turbine valve dynamics, turbine blade flows, transitions to turbulence in shear layers and mixing layers and basic combustion flow stuctures. The group has available experimental facilities of unusual quality and capacity in water, and at low and high speeds in air.It is desired to map global flow fields, unusually unsteady in character. The technique of particle image velocimetry is now well developed for may such applications. In particular a processsing system is now available form Dantec which is compatible with a wide range of unput signal types. For low speed flows in water an acoustically-shettered continuous laser is appropriate; for high speed air flows a pulsed laser is needed. These will be used for the immediate support of six postgraduate projects and a number of postgraduate projects.
