Summary on Grant Application Form
Dilatational strains cause relaxations in polymers to shift to lower temperatures or higher frequencies. This principle will be used to determine levels of thermal and mechanical stress within rubber particles or other disperse phases in polymer blends. Dynamic mechanical spectra will be obtained from bars which will at the same time be subjected to high tensile or compressive stresses (comparable with the yield stress). Information about the mechanically-induced shift factor will then be used in combination with dynamic loss data to determine the level of thermal stresses. This information will be related to the resistance of second-phase particles to cavitation or debonding under mechanically applied stress.
