Summary on Grant Application Form |
It is proposed to develop a novel experimental apparatus for characterising the nanomicro mechanical behaviour of single particles in the size range of 1m to 200 m. The instrument developed will be used to study the mechanical properties, quasi-spherical synthetic organic and biological entities with three differing structures; homogeneous and non homogeneous and clustered in both normal and transverse modes of deformation. The proposed instrument will be a unique experimental facility whose development is possible due to recent innovations in nanotechnology, AFM instrumentation and laser optic structure/property information on particles to be obtained via analysis of the experimental load-displacement curves. This data will allow the formulation of short range interparticle interaction lows consistent with the compressive and the shear deformations that these types of particles undergo during common processing operations.Key Words: Rheology, Processing, Chemical Engineering, Nanotechnology, Mechanics, Particles, Instrumentation, Gels, Shear
