Summary on Grant Application Form
Coupled channels analyses of 6Li and 7Li elastic scattering have revealed that these two isotopes have very different properties. In particular, a threshold anomaly has been observed in 7Li scattering, while such a phenomenon has been found to be absent in 6Li scattering. This has been interpreted as evidence for the breakup of cross-sections of the two nuclei being radically different at bombarding energies near the Coulomb barrier, while being similar at higher energies. Here funds are requested which would enable this interpretation to be tested by a simple measurement of the breakup cross-sections. Funds are also requested to enable the development of a more sophisticated experiment applying the instruments also requested to enable the development of a more sophisticated experiment applying the instruments developed by the Charissa collaboration for studies of the breakup of sd-shell nuclei to the breakup of 6Li.Key Words: Physics, Nuclear, Semiconductors, Clustering, Reactions, Scattering, Breakup
