Summary on Grant Application Form
Polymer latexes from the basis of paints, adhesives and textile coatings. Currently, latexes are manufactured exclusively by emulsion polymerisation which, although well established, is restricted to certain types of monomers and the technique is essentially environmentally hostile. This proposal aims to produce colloidal polymer latexes by emulsifying bulk polymerised thermoplastics in water. Due to the very high and shear thinning behaviour of the polymer melt viscosity, direct emulsification of the polymer in water cannot be achieved with the existing emulsification technology. Instead we use flow induced phase inversion emulsification technique which is ideally suited for such fluids and high throughput processes. The proposal has the potential to deliver: a) clean technology alternative to emulsion polymerisation; b) novel processing route for the improved product quality and c) novel products which are not accessible by current processing routes.
