Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project brings together experts in CE, charge-coupled devices (CCDs) and image analysis in an interdisciplinary project with the objectives of developing and building a new generation of UV-visible detectors which will offer substantial improvements in trace analysis and structural characterisation of analytes. By driving CCD arrays in synchrony with the electric-field driven motion of the analytes, and applying correlation and image processing techniques, our goals are:(i) to develop and build absorbance and fluorescence detectors with significant improvements in limit of detection, linear dynamic range, and spatial resolution in comparison with existing lamp-based detectors for CE;(ii) to use the second dimension on the CCD array to provide a powerful combination of spatial and spectral information for characterising analytes in complex mixtures.(iii) to quantitate species of lower concentrations than hitherto possible by CE, in particular trace impurities down to the 0.01% level simultaneous with the main component assay for selected analytes in pharmaceutical and agrochemical samples.Key Words: Chemistry, Electronics, Instrumentation, Optics, Analytical, Separations, Capillary Electrophoresis
