Summary on Grant Application Form
The penalty for fouling due to oversized plant, reduced thermal effeiciency, increased pressure drop, additional maintenance and loss of production has been estimated as about 1000 million GPB per year for the UK. The principal applicant has been active in research on fouling mechanisms and mitigation for the past 10 years and received several international awards for his findings. Due to his relocation to the UK in 1993, he had to leave behind a well-equippeed and well-funded research laboratry in Aukland, New Zealand. Drs Hughes and Zhao have both significant experience in fouling research. Considerable progess has been made to re-establish a similar, or even better, laboratory in the University of Surrey. However, there is still a lack of key equipment for some of the experimental and theoretical studies. Funding is sought to purchase two complete heat transfer fouling test rigs previously designed and constructed by te principal applicant in the University of Auckland, a pilot size fluidized bed heat exchanger and a workstation. Details about the investigations which will immediately be started with this equipment are given in the attached CASE FOR SUPPORT.
