Summary on Grant Application Form |
It is proposed to upgrade our X-ray powder diffraction facilities to provide a greatly improved service, including facilities for low angle scattering. The new data handling equipment will have a high capacity making feasible a service for a wide community of researchers. X-ray powder refraction is a mature technique, not to be regarded as a vehicle for research into the technique itself but rather it is appropriate to service work. It is to be expected that over several years a high proportion of the work done will be in applied science, especially including process engineering work connected with the morphology of catalysts. Accordingly, the projects chosen for work during the nine month installation phase are studies of automotive catalysts and the fabrication of thin, magnetic metal films and conducting oxide films.
