Summary on Grant Application Form |
It is proposed to undertake a series of experimental and theoretical investigations of the creative role of white noise in nonlinear dynamical systems, concentrating on situations where (remarkably) the noise seems to result in greater order. In particular, we wish to study: (a) noise-protected heterodyning, in which the familiar process of heterodyning is predicted to be enhanced by the addition of external noise; (b) noise-induced linearisation of the ensemble-averaged response of nonlinear systems, recently identified as a general phenomenon at Lancaster; (c) zero-dispersion stochastic resonance, a new phenomenon discovered at Lancaster, in which a weak periodic signal in a system whose characteristic eigenfrequency varies nonmonotically with energy can also be enhanced by external noise; (d) fundamental fluctuational phenomena of periodically driven underdamped oscillators and, especially, to search for the predicted fluctuational separatrix.
