Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research proposal was motivated by an unexpected discovery of optical coloration and transparency in a polycrystalline Sialon which was stabilised as the a polymorph by solution of specific rare-earth ions in a valence state controlled by a special gaseous environment during sintering. The research programme will:+ Extend the search for unusual optical properties to other dopant rare-earths and define constitutional limits for a stability.+ Refine the sintering conditions to optimise density, hardness and optical properties.+ Prepare films and coatings using PVD (laser ablation) CVD and tape casting.+ Use optical and luminescence spectroscopies to understand the electronic origins of optical behaviour.+ Survey mechanical and optical properties with reference to potential applications as ultra-hard windows tribological coatings, radiation sensors, lasers and displays for severe environment.
