Since the invention of the scanning tunnelling microscope physicists and chemists have, for the first time, been able to visualise individual atoms and molecules with relatively simple apparatus. Although the Nobel Prize winning technique has produced unprecedented resolution and permitted direct measurement of electronic properties, one drawback, especially in chemistry and biology, has been the lack of chemical structural information in the images. Chemical information is readily obtained using laser spectroscopic techniques but obviously with very low spatial resolution, making direct measurement of atomic structural information impossible. The impact of a technique which could achieve chemical as well as atomic spatial resolution would be enormous. The change in tunnelling current between the ground and excited state of a particular molecular provides another contrast dimension in STM images which can be revealed by selectively exciting these molecules using a tuneable light source. The objective of the work proposed here is to develop a novel hybrid instrument with tuneable laser excitation of the sample during STM imaging and to demonstrate the potential for direct atomic scale chemical structure analysis.
