Summary on Grant Application Form
The research is an experimental investigation of the interaction between magnetic probes and samples in scanning probe microscopy. it will use in-house fabricated and characterised tip coatings and samples which show a wide range of magnetisation and coercivity but relatively simple micromagnetic structures. In particular, it is planned that some of the coatings will be in a single domain state, magnetised either normally or in-plane, and that samples will exhibit a regular and periodic domain structure. Kerr/Faraday microscopy will be used to obtain unperturbed optical images of some of these domain structures and domain walls for comparison with MFM images. An experimentally obtained database of the factors affecting the images from these well-characterised tip/sample interactions will help other workers to fully exploit the techniques of MFM and fulfil the potential of SPM in magnetic materials characterisation.
