Summary on Grant Application Form
A novel process will be developed for treating aqueous effluents containing certain heavy metal ions, including Ag(I), Hg(II), or Pb(II), which will be precipitated as metal sulfides by addition of (hydrogen) sulfide. Following solid/liquid separation, these particles will be reduced to elemental metal by Cr(II) or V(II) species, generated and re-generated in an electrochemical reactor. The metal sulfide reduction involves a phase separation of products, enabling recycling of metal after reduction involves a phase separation of products, enabling recycling of metal after solid/liquid separation, and sulfide as hydrogen sulfide gas, for precipitation of more metal sulfide. Overall the process will produce, e.g., only oxygen , and consume only electrical energy, with no on-going chemical reagent requirement. Operationally, the project will involve the design, construction, characterisation, control, modelling and optimisation of the behaviour of three coupled reactors for precipitation/separation, reduction and electrochemical synthesis of the redundant.
