Summary on Grant Application Form
Although format frequencies are recognised by phoneticians as giving the most useful characterisation of a vowel's quality (since they are impervious to various distortions that can alter the overall spectral shape), formats are rarely used in speech recognition because of the difficulty in extracting them reliably. There is also little direct psychological evidence for the human auditory system extracting format frequencies. The proposed research will carry out perceptual experiments aimed (I) at demonstrating that listeners do indeed extract the frequency of the first format, and (II) at gaining insight into the mechanisms used.
