Multimedia systems are one of the fastest growing areas of IT. Substantial improvements are required for navigating through non-text information if their full potential is to be realised. Navigation based on content matching is an important development, but the aim of this project is to innovate more versatile facilities for navigation through non-text information than content matching alone can provide. This will involve two major innovations: (1) the extensions of an open hypermedia architecture to support a multimedia thesaurus (MMT) in which representations of objects in different media will be maintained, together with their inter-relationships; (2) the development of intelligent agents which will use knowledge from the MMT and additional knowledge accumulated automatically during information entry, to seek out discriminators between object classes and also naturally occurring groupings of media based features to augment the MMT. The MMT and agents will work together to greatly enhance facilities for navigation and retrieval.
