Existing research at the Uni of Bath has established that providing domestic energy consumers with feedback on their consumption, along with information on how to reduce that consumption, can directly affect the quantity of energy they consume. The new generation of smart utility meters have considerable potential to enhance this feedback process if they are developed and implemented properly. This research will take the results of the work at Bath, informed by research on the development pathways for smart meters at the Centre for Urban Technology, and use them to develop a 'green' meter which will provide feedback and information directly to consumers and 'tune' that feedback to their individual circumstances. Once developed, the green meter will be tested in a live situation in order to quantify the benefits. The results will then be fed into the ongoing debate about the technical and policy issues which surround the implementation of new metering technology.
