Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal is to investigate the issues in providing a unified general-purpose location service for large scale multimedia mobile environments based on heterogeneous sensing systems. Generally, sensing systems identify a location within some form of cell. The input of various sources of location must be combined in order to achieve ubiquitous service coverage. We will investigate techniques for coping with overlapping cells and varying degrees of reliability in sensor information - a higher (spatial and temporal) positioning accuracy can be achieved by exploiting overlaps among sightings from different sources. Mobility models can be used to interpolate and extrapolate locations. We intend to make use of domain and policy work from other projects and will investigate the use of domains as a means of grouping cells to reflect physical structures such as buildings or organisational structures such as Departments. This gives a hierarchical logical location structure which can also be used to specify policies relating to generating or accessing location information. Location information can infringe people's privacy, consequently, our work investigates mechanisms to exactly specify and supervise the level of access to location data that is wanted. These concepts will be tested within a multimedia application for interactive tourist guidance.
