Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research involves the design and synthesis of a range of new tripodal imine donor ligands with broad applicability in co-ordination chemistry. It is envisaged that it will be possible to design the new range of ligands to have complementary electronic and steric properties which may be fine tuned to provide the desired properties. The ligands may be regarded as analogues of the trispyrazolylborates, although with acyclic imine donors, rather than pyrazolyl rings. This should confer extra flexibility of the ligands since the donor nitrogen carries an R group which may be chosen from a broad range of possibilities, and which can be used to change the electronic and steric properties of the ligands. If these R groups are chiral, the resulting ligand possesses C3-symmetry and, when co-ordinated to an octahedral metal complex, all remaining co-ordination sites are rendered equivalent, but asymmetric. This is a situation complementary to a C2-symmetric bidentate ligand/square planar metal complex combination, many of which are known to be excellent asymmetric catalysts. Our objective is therefore to develop the new C3-symmetric ligands, assess their co-ordination properties and establish their use in combination with an octahedral metal centre for asymmetric induction and catalysis.
