There is at present much interest in the integration of motor drives. Combination of control circuitry, power converter and motor into one compact unit is an attractive option in certain applications. The motor provides a hostile working environment, being a source of both high temperatures and mechanical vibration, and will reduce the lifetime of electrical components housed within the casing. Temperature regulation is identified as a key design consideration in the integration of motor drives. An extensive study of temperature distribution and heat loss mechanisms within the motor will serve as a base for a thermal model. This model will be used to study novel force-cooling techniques of the motor's statorand rotor. The resulting information will be used to investigate improved motor designs which can provide high performance operation at elevated temperatures. Further, the thermal study will aid in the assessment of the viability of drive integration and will yield information regarding the specification, positioning and design of drive circuitry within the motor casing. An integrated motor drive system and power distribution network will be constructed and performance will be compared with that of a drive having a conventional topology.
