Summary on Grant Application Form
Electrons confined at a GaAs heterojunction in the presence of a strong perpendicular magnetic field form ground states which are strongly stabilised by correlation effects due to electron-electron interactions. Ground states include quantum Hall liquids and, in the extreme quantum limit, the Wigner solid. The lowest dispersion branch of collective intra-landau level electronic excitations is of central importance in all theories of the fractional quantum Hall effect. Whereas measurements of thermally-activated electron transport provide values for large wavevector charge density excitations, the theoretically predicted magnetoroton states which are sensitive to short range order have yet to be confirmed experimentally. We propose to use Raman spectroscopy to study charge and spin density excitations at zero and finite in-plane wavevectors using grating structures defined by electron beam lithography, and also by atomic force microscopy. These measurements will be complemented by phonon absorption spectroscopy undertaken by collaborators at the University of Nottingham.
