TiAl-based alloys are low density, high temperature materials with potential for substantial performance benefits in gas turbine applications. A potential major limitation to their use is their low strain to fracture and the corresponding uncertainty over their fracture characteristics in tension (particularly high strain rate) and creep. This study aims to identify the fracture behaviour and damage accumulation mechanisms operating in gamma alloys, and to develop constitutive fracture models for describing fracture with respect to the microstructure. The study will be closely coupled to an on-going industrial program by EGT, DRA and the Dept. of Mech. Eng., IC, which will provide materials and samples in the as-tested condition. To supplement the data provided by the industrial program, interrupted tensile and creep tests will be carried out to evaluate damage as it evolves. Short rod fracture toughness and Charpy impact measurements will also be made to evaluate fracture. Fractography and microstructure characterisation will be employed to determine the extent of damage and its distribution, and to validate the failure models. FEM analysis of the localised deformation and strain accumulation within the individual components of the microstructure (alpha2, gamma), will elucidate the influence of the morphology and scale.
